March 22, 2016 20:43

Many of the phytonutrients present in strawberries function not only as antioxidants but also as anti-inflammatory nutrients.  Several research studies have shown that the many  diverse strawberry phytonutrients actually work together in a synergistic fashion to achieve their cardiovascular benefits.

Several recent studies have found regular intake of strawberries to be associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Health benefits of strawberries include:

  1. Increased immune function
  2. Protection against heart disease
  3. Slows aging
  4. DNA repair and protection
  5. Alzheimer's disease protection
  6. Osteoporosis protection
  7. Antioxidant protection
  8. Prevention of epileptic seizures
  9. Prevention of alopecia (spot baldness)

  • Buy local.  If berries come from far away, they have to be picked before they’re ripe, which means less flavor.
  • Look for bright red berries  If there’s white around the stem, or in the center of the berry, it wasn’t picked at peak ripeness. Don't buy green strawberries.
  • Buy in season. Fruit that comes out of season comes from farther away and generally lacks the flavor of fruit in season.
  • Strawberries are highly perishable; they can turn soft, mushy, and mouldy within 24 hours. When you bring home a box of berries, empty it out and check the fruits.
  • Remove any soft, overripe strawberries for immediate consumption; discard any smashed or mouldy berries.
  • Strawberries freeze well, allowing you to enjoy them practically year round.
